The self-guided walking tour application allows users to interact with the lived environment of Charlottesville’s historic African American community. The tour takes users beyond the exhibition Pride Overcomes Prejudice and highlights sites, individuals, and events that figure prominently in this story. As urban renewal has erased many of the locals related to African American history, the tour provides a vivid picture of this community whose social and educational center was the Jefferson School.
We would like to thank Elizabeth Birdsall for her generous of this project. We also thank Scot French, Lauranett Lee, Gayle Schulman and Cinder Stanton for graciously sharing their research and expertise. We appreciate the help of interns Matthew Morgan and Emma Pierce.
The walking tour is available for free download on iTunes and the Google Play store.
