Earth’s surface is warming due to climate change, and many of the warmest years on record have happened in the past 20 years. The effects of a warming planet are not felt equitably among people. In fact, the harmful effects of a warming planet on people’s well-being disproportionately fall on poorer communities and communities of color, including here in the Charlottesville region.‘

Picturing Climate Justice provides a window into local actions calling for a just response to climate change. In 2021, local groups, including the Community Climate Collaborative (C3), Cultivate Charlottesville, Wildrock, and the UVA School of Architecture Project Pipeline Youth Design Mentorship Program collaborated with the UVA Equity Center to engage youth in a number of activities represented in this exhibit. Photographs, artwork, and maps from these activities are presented alongside interactive data tools to shed light on the nature of climate injustice in our region. The exhibit also offers visions for a more just regional response to climate change and invites visitors to contribute their thoughts, inviting us all into the work of climate justice.

The exhibition is a collaboration between the Equity Center, a UVA Democracy Initiative Center for the Redress of Inequity through Community-Engaged Scholarship, UVA Sustainability and the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center.

Masks are required when visiting JSAAHC.
